Hill and Moorland Leader >> Hill and Moorland Leader Training

The three-day Hill and Moorland Leader Training course is based in the High Peak and is designed to give a thorough introduction to the skills needed to lead walking groups. There is a strong focus on the practical skills which leaders of groups need and navigation away from paths is a key part of this. Practical sessions are supplemented by evening lectures on subjects such as upland weather and emergency procedures.

Prior to attending this course candidates must:

  • Be at least eighteen years of age
  • Have experienced at least twenty days walking in mountainous or upland areas of the UK. This experience should have been gained over at least a twelve month period.
  • Have registered for the Hill and Moorland Leader Award with Mountain Training. In order to register for an award with Mountain Training you must be a current member of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC). Note: it is not necessary to have registered with Mountain Training to book a place on the course. Registration can take place between booking and the start of the course.

Two nights bed and breakfast accommodation at a youth hostel is provided. Please supply your own lunches on all three days. There is a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, plenty of local pubs and the youth hostel can also provide evening meals.
